The Symbol of the Hidden Christians of Japan – This unusual symbol is a crest known as the Gion-mamori. Originally from the amulet of the Gion-jinja pagan shrine in Japan, it was adopted and changed slightly by Japanese Christians, who called themselves “Kakure Kirishitan”, the “hidden Christians.” They used it as a way to identify other Christians during the time of persecution under the Tokugawa shogunate, which lasted from the 1600s - 1800s. 

Credo means “I believe” in Latin, and it has “Kirishitan” (Christian) in the traditional Japanese characters below.
